Research Into Mental Health and Well Being

  • One in ten children between the ages of one and 15 has a mental health disorder. (The Office for National Statistics Mental health in children and young people in Great Britain, 2005)
  • Estimates vary, but research suggests that 20% of children have a mental health problem in any given year, and about 10% at any one time.  (Lifetime Impacts: Childhood and Adolescent Mental Health, Understanding The Lifetime Impacts, Mental Health Foundation, 2005)
  • Rates of mental health problems among children increase as they reach adolescence. Disorders affect 10.4% of boys aged 5-10, rising to 12.8% of boys aged 11-15, and 5.9% of girls aged 5-10, rising to 9.65% of girls aged 11-15. (Mental Disorder More Common In Boys, National Statistics Online, 2004)

LO1- Be able to produce pre-production materials for a planned audio visual products

Something that advertises new products using audio and visual elements, usually viewed through a medium capable of audio and visual outputs.

Media product used to promote using sound and visuals.

    Visuals- CGI, animation, photographs, footage
    Sound- Music, Dialogue

A media product that is designed to promote a cause, some examples are songs, event, or the release of a film.

    1- Buzzfeed

I think that the main thing that we could use from this video is asking people questions about their views on depression and whether it should be a subject to talk about. I think that most people find that mental illnesses are a negative thing to speak about because society haven't really been introduced to the topic and so don't know about any of the positives. Another thing that could be used is using public places to ask people these sorts of questions.

    2- Creature Comforts

Something that could be pastieged from this clip is the animated effects at the beginning of it as it adds an aspect of comedy which starts it of on a positive.

    3- Vice Documentary

    4- Critical Hit Studios

    5- SHOW Studio

These Audio Visual  products are what we will take aspects from and put into our own product.

We have been given a task from the company Flourish to create a audio/visual product that highlights mental illnesses in positive ways. This product could be used on a website and or at events. The product must be educational or enlightening and also have a specific focus.

We are answering the last question of the brief in our documentary which is; What puts young people of current discussions of mental health?

    Who are Flourish?

Flourish is an exciting project, providing an opportunity for adults with a brain injury to have fun, socialise, and relax in a non-judgemental environment. It’s run by student volunteers from the University of Sheffield Union of Students who have had basic brain injury awareness training given by Dave Ansell, Care Co-ordinator in the Brain Injury Social Work team.

Information about them and what they do.
    Their aim as a company.
